Considered a medium-sized mussel, it is distinctly kidney shaped, with one end that is inflated and rounded. The shell's inside is bluish-white, sometimes with an olive or pink tint, with a distinct melon coloured foot. In Canada, the Brook Floater is only found in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Brook floaters spend the beginning of their lives on the gills of fish.
