Rainbow Smelt are predatory fish native to the North Atlantic coast and parts of the St. Lawrence River watershed. They feed on plankton—small plants and animals in the water—as well as young native fish. Smelt spend most of their lives at sea and migrate into freshwater to spawn. As adults, they typically measure 19 to 30 centimeters long and can live in both salt and freshwater environments.
